Do you want to do something really different, exciting, and rewarding? Then maybe teaching English over seas is just for you. But you ask- are there really jobs out there that offer all this and more? The answer, of course, is YES! Where are these job? There are numerous of English teaching jobs available just about anywhere- Asia, Europe, South American, North America, Russia, the Middle East.
Just one thing to keep in mind if you are interested in teaching specifically at hotels- many don't advertise. Thousands of job listing can be found on ESL, TEFL, or TOESL sites, but usually for schools, universities, and language institutes. Because of the number of applicants hotels can receive, they generally only advertise locally- not on the international list sites. So for those jobs- check out the local newspapers or just drop off your resume.
What are the requirements for these jobs? That, of course, depends on the country and the specific employer. Some employers require advanced degrees (master and doctorate degrees), some require bachelors degrees (but not necessarily in English education or education), some require a high school diploma, and some employers may require only that the teachers be native speakers.
Do teachers need special training? Not necessarily- but, of course, it helps. A person with a TEFL or TOESL certificate may have better opportunities, but in many places this is not an absolute requirement.
What kinds of places employ English teachers? Universities, high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, public and private language institutes, companies and corporations, and individuals.
What kinds of students are taught? All kinds- young and old, school age (from pre-school to university), company employees, government employees, beginning students, intermediate students, advanced students, and the almost fluent.
What aspect of English is taught? Again, it depends on the employer. Many language institutes offer classes primarily in conversational English. In a university job, a teacher may be providing instruction in all phases of English education- speaking, reading, listening, writing, and grammar. A corporate job may focus on improving their employees writing and conversation skills.
Are jobs limited to native speakers of British or American English? No. Some employers prefer to hire only British or American native speakers, but certainly not all. Teacher can come from all over- Canada, Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, America, South America, South Africa- just about anyplace that speaks English as the primary language.
Where, besides elementary schools, are teaching jobs available? The answer to this question is hotels. But why teach at a hotel? Good question. After all, there are hundreds of jobs at schools, universities, businesses, and language institutes all over the world.
What are the advantages of teaching at a hotel? Working at hotels teaching English has many advantages over teaching at more traditional places, such as schools, universities, or language institutes. To find out more go to Hotel English.
